Tramping and Bush Walks around Lake Okataina Scenic Reserve
Information is available for many beautiful bush walks of varying lengths, both along the lakeside and within the Lake Okataina Scenic Reserve. Take the Te Auheke Track (40 minutes one way), also known as the Cascades Track. See the beautiful 10m high Cascades Falls, or venture out after dark to see the thousands of glow worms which inhabit a cliff-face. Another stunning walk is the Tarawhai Track (50 minutes to complete loop). This circular track is great for those new to New Zealand, as the walk displays great examples of rimu, pukatea and tawa and other native trees.
The Department of Conservation encourage trampers to come prepared when venturing out on a walk. We suggest strong, comfortable boots, warm clothing, a raincoat, first aid kit, food and drink, a hat and sunscreen. It is also a good idea to let someone know your tramping intentions.
Tracks in the Lake Okataina Scenic Reserve are clearly sign posted and suitable for all fitness levels. Don’t forget your camera! There are unlimited photo opportunities to take advantage of!
This area is steeped in Maori history.
